Touch the clean hot tip to pad and lead
Add 1mm to 3mm solder under the iron tip
Solder melts when it touches the hot tip
Keep the soldering iron on pad and lead for 1 second

Hold the soldering iron on the joint for about a second. Just long enough to allow the molten solder to flow around the components. Don't hold it there too long because you can overheat things. This can cause damage to components, bad joints and even lift the copper tracks away from the board.
